What Is VWAP and How Do Traders Use It?
VWAP (Volume-Weighted Average Price) is the average price of an asset over a period, weighted by volume. Here is what it shows, how intraday traders read it, and its limits. Educational, not financial advice.
VWAP (Volume-Weighted Average Price) is the average price an asset has traded at over a period, weighted by the volume at each price. It resets at the start of each session and is shown as a single line on the chart. Traders treat it as a reference for the day's "average" or fair price — where the bulk of volume actually changed hands. Educational, not financial advice.
What VWAP shows
Because it is weighted by volume, VWAP leans toward the prices where the most trading happened, not just the mid-point of the range. A simple read:
- Price above VWAP means buyers have been in control on the session, on average.
- Price below VWAP means sellers have been in control.
- Price at VWAP is a balance point the market keeps returning to.
How intraday traders use it
- A fair-value reference. Institutions use VWAP to judge whether they are filling orders at a good average price, which is part of why so many eyes are on it.
- A trend filter. Some traders only look for longs while price holds above VWAP, and shorts below, using it as a bias line rather than an entry.
- A mean-reversion reference. Others watch for price to stretch far from VWAP and react, always with their own confirmation.

The honest limits
- VWAP is anchored to the session — it resets daily, so it says little about the multi-day picture (an anchored VWAP from a specific date is a separate tool).
- It lags as the day builds, since it is a cumulative average.
- It describes where volume traded, not what happens next — it is a reference, not a prediction.
Where VWAP fits
VWAP is one of several context tools — alongside market structure and trend reads — for judging whether price is rich or cheap relative to the day. If you want objective trend and structure markers to pair with it on TradingView, VASA Trend AI is a set of educational, non-repainting indicators; it marks conditions on your chart and does not give buy or sell advice.
Takeaway
VWAP is the volume-weighted average price for the session — a fair-value line that many traders and institutions watch. Use it as a bias or reference point, remember it resets each day and lags, and confirm it against structure rather than trading the line alone.
