What Is Support and Resistance in Trading?
Support is a price level where buying has tended to stop a fall; resistance is where selling has tended to stop a rise. Here is how to spot them, why they matter, and their limits. Educational, not financial advice.
Support is a price level where buying has repeatedly been strong enough to stop price falling further; resistance is a level where selling has repeatedly stopped price rising. They are zones where price has reacted before, so traders watch them as areas where it may react again. Educational, not financial advice.
How to spot them
Look for price levels the market has touched and turned away from more than once:
- Support — a floor under price where it bounced before.
- Resistance — a ceiling above price where it stalled before.
Draw them as zones, not exact lines — real reactions happen around an area, not a single price.
Why they matter
Support and resistance mark where supply and demand have shifted before. Traders use them to judge where a move might pause or reverse, where to place stops (beyond the zone, not inside it), and where a target might sit (the next zone). They describe where to pay attention, not an instruction to act.

Polarity: support becomes resistance
When price breaks through a level, it often flips role: broken resistance can become support, and broken support can become resistance. This is why a level that once capped price can later hold it up — the same zone, a new role. It is covered in price action vs indicators.
The honest limits
- Levels break — "it held before" is not "it will hold again."
- The more obvious a level, the more traders watch it, which cuts both ways.
- Higher-timeframe levels matter more than intraday noise; context decides.

Takeaway
Support is a floor buyers have defended; resistance is a ceiling sellers have defended. Mark them as zones, watch for reactions rather than guarantees, and remember a broken level often flips role.
