What Is a Funded Trading Account?

A funded trading account lets you trade a firm's capital after passing an evaluation, and split the profits. Here is how funded accounts work, how you get one, and the honest catch. Educational, not financial advice.

A funded trading account is an arrangement where a proprietary trading firm lets you trade its capital — not your own — after you prove your skill by passing an evaluation, and you keep an agreed share of any profit. You risk a challenge fee, not a full trading account. Educational, not financial advice.

How a funded account works

  1. You pay a one-time fee to attempt an evaluation (a "challenge") on a demo account with rules.
  2. You hit a profit target while staying inside the risk rules — a max daily loss, an overall drawdown, and often a consistency rule.
  3. Pass, and the firm gives you a funded account. Profits are split — commonly you keep the larger share and the firm takes the rest.

What is a profit split?

A profit split is how the firm divides any profit between you and them (for example, you keep 80 percent, the firm keeps 20 percent). It is not a salary and not a guarantee of income — you only earn if the account makes money, and outcomes depend entirely on performance.

  • Most people fail the evaluation — usually by breaching the daily loss or drawdown rule, not by missing the target. No pass-rate is guaranteed.
  • The rules are strict by design; the firm is testing risk management, not aggression.
  • You are trading the firm's capital under its rules, so discipline matters more than a big edge.

How to give yourself a fair chance

Size small and fixed so a normal losing streak stays far from the limits (our position size calculator does the maths), learn the rulebook cold, and practise the exact conditions first. The Funded Trader Track walks through the rules the risk-first way.

Takeaway

A funded account lets you trade a firm's money and keep a share of the profit — after passing an evaluation built around strict risk rules. Treat it as a risk-management test, size small, and know the rules before you pay.
