What Is a Max Daily Loss in a Prop Firm Challenge?

The max daily loss is the most you can lose in a single day before a prop firm fails your account. Here is how it is measured, how it differs from overall drawdown, and how to size trades so you do not breach it. Educational, not financial advice.

The max daily loss (or daily drawdown) is the largest amount your account can drop in a single trading day before the prop firm automatically fails your challenge or funded account. It is usually a fixed percentage or dollar figure of your starting balance, and breaching it — even once — normally ends the account immediately. This is an educational guide, not financial advice.

How the max daily loss is measured

Most firms measure it from one of two reference points, and the difference matters:

  • From the day's starting balance — your equity cannot fall more than X% below where it was at the day's open.
  • From the highest equity reached that day (some firms) — the limit trails your intraday peak, so banking profit then giving it back can still breach it.

Many firms also count unrealised losses on open positions, not just closed trades, so a deep drawdown on a floating position can trip the limit before you close it.

Daily loss vs overall drawdown

Max daily lossLoss in a single dayYes — each new day
Overall / max drawdownTotal loss from the startNo — it is a hard floor

You have to respect both at once. A small daily limit is usually what ends challenges, because it only takes one oversized, emotional session to hit it.

A worked example

On a $50,000 account with a 5% daily loss limit, your daily floor is $2,500. If you risk 1% ($500) per trade, it would take five full losing trades in one day to breach it — unlikely if you stop after a couple. If you risk 3% ($1,500), just two losers ends your day at the limit. Small, fixed risk is what keeps you inside the rule.

How to avoid breaching it

  • Work out your daily-loss floor in dollars before the session and write it down.
  • Size every trade off risk, not gut feel — our position size calculator does the maths per trade.
  • Set a personal stop for the day well inside the firm's limit (for example, stop at 3% when the rule is 5%).
  • Account for open-position losses and costs, since many firms count them live.

Our free prop firm consistency-rule calculator and the Funded Trader Track walk through how the daily loss, drawdown and consistency rule interact on a real challenge.

Takeaway

The max daily loss is the single most common reason traders fail a challenge, because it punishes one bad session, not a bad month. Know your dollar floor, size small and fixed, and stop for the day before the firm stops you.
