Risk:Reward and Expectancy — Win by Being Right Less Often
You don't have to be right most of the time. You have to win more when you're right than you lose when you're wrong.
This is the lesson that frees a lot of traders from the need to be right. Two ideas do the heavy lifting: risk-to-reward, and expectancy.
Risk:Reward — the asymmetry that pays
If you risk 1 unit to make 2 (a risk-reward of 1:2), you can be right just 40% of the time and still come out ahead over a series of trades.
Before you enter, ask whether the realistic reward is at least twice your risk. If it isn't, it's usually not worth the trade — a lower win rate at good R:R beats a high win rate at bad R:R.
Expectancy — is the system actually profitable?
Expectancy = (Win% × Average win) − (Loss% × Average loss). It tells you what you can expect, on average, per trade.
Example: you win 40% of trades at $200 and lose 60% at $100. Expectancy = (0.40 × $200) − (0.60 × $100) = +$20 per trade. Positive means the edge shows up over enough trades. Negative means no position size can save it — you'd just lose faster.
This is why traders journal: you can only know your true win rate and averages by tracking them. Judge your system by its expectancy over many trades, not by the last one.

Check your expectancy →Day 3 takeaways
- Aim for setups with reward at least twice the risk (R:R ≥ 1:2).
- At 1:2, a ~40% win rate can still be profitable.
- Positive expectancy over many trades is the goal — track it.
