What Is the 1% Risk Rule in Trading?
The 1% risk rule means risking no more than one percent of your account on any single trade. Here is how it works, why it protects you from a losing streak, and how to apply it. Educational, not financial advice.
The 1% risk rule means you never risk more than one percent of your trading account on a single trade. On a $10,000 account, that caps your maximum loss per trade at $100 — no matter how confident you feel. It is a risk-management rule designed to keep a normal losing streak from doing serious damage. Educational, not financial advice.
How to apply it
- Take one percent of your account — the most you will lose on the trade.
- Measure your stop distance (entry to stop).
- Position size = (one percent of account) divided by (stop distance).
Example: a $10,000 account, one percent is $100. Stop is $0.50 away. Size = $100 divided by $0.50 = 200 shares. Our position size calculator does this instantly.
Why 1% (and why it works)
Risking small and fixed means a string of losses barely dents the account, so you survive to trade the next setup. The maths is unforgiving the other way:

| Risk per trade | Approx. loss after 10 losses in a row |
|---|---|
| 1 percent | about 10 percent |
| 5 percent | about 40 percent |
| 10 percent | about 65 percent |
Big risk turns a normal losing streak into a crisis. This is a core reason most traders lose money.
Is 1% the only number?
No — some use 0.5 percent, some 2 percent. The principle matters more than the exact figure: a small, fixed fraction per trade so no single loss, and no normal streak, can hurt you. New traders lean toward the smaller end.
Takeaway
The 1% rule caps each trade's loss at one percent of your account, sizing the position off your stop distance. It will not make you profitable on its own, but it is what keeps a losing streak survivable — the thing that keeps you in the game long enough to improve.
